Working, like a good furnace, "quietly and efficiently": Cincinnati nonprofit People Working Cooperatively helps poor pay their heating bills.

"Wednesday's weather forecast called for the coldest night of the year yet on Wednesday, when many families would simply turn up their thermostat to keep warm at home. But what about those who cannot afford to heat their homes, or who lack money needed to fix a broken furnace?. . . Thanks to the nonprofit People Working Cooperatively (PWC), the Hurdles stayed warm and dry through winter with a new roof and furnace. 'The need is there. We just do our work quietly and efficiently. People just don't realize we're there and how many people we're serving,' PWC's president, Jock Pitts said." -- Holly Pennebaker and Tony Mirones, WCPO.com
