What has Downton to do with San Diego? Handful of San Diego philanthropists support Masterpiece Trust to the tune of over $3 million.

"When TV viewers curl up with a spot of tea for the PBS drama 'Downton Abbey,' they can thank San Diego for the experience. The blockbuster Masterpiece series, which airs Sunday evenings, earned record ratings and critical praise for its portrayal of an aristocratic, turn-of-the-century British family. San Diego philanthropists Darlene Shiley, Conrad Prebys and Debbie Turner, and others, have played key supporting roles in its success. Their combined contributions of $3,325,000 make up more than half of the nationwide Masterpiece Trust, which supports both local PBS stations and Masterpiece programming. And the donors aren’t merely contributors to the series, they’re also avid fans." -- Deborah Sullivan Brennan, the San Diego Union-Tribune
