New book tells story of "The Blue Ribbon," Los Angeles philanthropic group founded by Dorothy Chandler, still going strong 45 years on.

"Dorothy Chandler was a woman to whom the word 'no' was not an answer, and the formidable 'culture-vultur-enne' used this steadfast dedication to build the Downtown LA performing arts nucleus The Music Center as well as create the philanthropic organization The Blue Ribbon, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this season. Beginning over an afternoon of tea, sandwiches, cake, and the marquee presence of screen legend Gregory Peck, Chandler told a room of 27 women in 1968 that she wanted to create a group that sponsored cultural, educational, and social activities for all The Music Center’s resident companies, which today comprise the LA Philharmonic, Center Theatre Group, LA Master Chorale, and LA Opera." -- Rakhee Bhatt, Los Angeles Confidential
